VEG POWER

VEG POWER WITH PROPAGATE
VEG POWER

Veg Power is an 8- 10 week cooking course to build confidence, skills and knowledge in using more vegetables when cooking - healthy, cheaper and better for the planet!

Objectives

Bringing local people together through cooking and sharing food.
Encouraging participants to adopt healthier options and eat more vegetables.

Timings: 2 hours per week (or 2.5 hours if the group eat together), 8-10 sessions.

Requirements: Sufficient indoor space and table top to put 6-8 portable gas stoves, chopping boards and prep areas (maximum 8 people).

Propagate has a stock of 30+ recipes that we can suggest and all necessary equipment and resources if not already at your organisation.

Course structure:
  • The first meeting would be an introduction to each other and cooking together. The group would have a chat about why they have come along, what they would like to achieve and what they would like to share. We will then cook a prearranged recipe together. Collectively decide a ‘veg of the week’ - each recipe going forward would then be based on those vegetables.
  • We will discuss possibilities for each participant to ‘take the lead’ over the weeks, and share a recipe they know or choose something they would like to cook. They would be supported by Propagate to source ingredients, format and print recipes, and lead the session. Some people may want to do this, some may not. No pressure!
  • If participants are interested, we can also arrange to incorporate a REHIS Cooking Skills qualification. This is very practical qualification, there is no written test – just a half hour chat with the assessor at the end (external to Propagate but a partner organisation).
  • The cooking programme will be flexible and can be adjusted at all times to fit participants needs and aspirations.
Testimonials:

Great course, got me thinking about what I can cook without using meat, dishes were all tasty and I've used a few in my day to day cooking, also made a few discoveries like hummus!! Course facilitator was very encouraging and informative and had great enthusiasm for her subject, clearly a passion. Was also nice that there were only a small amount of participants. I'd recommend future courses to anyone who is interested in looking at new ways of eating and cooking. Have to say being on the course with you guys has made me realise you can eat well without eating meat so all good. Love every bit of the course :)

Enjoyable. Will try recipes out on family both traditional foodies and vegetarian. Due to health issues haven’t been cooking food for a while- so has been good to focus energy on cooking and reawakened interest.

The programme was very useful and informative.I really enjoyed it. Thank you so much everything
Before the Veg Cooking Club I never cooked with veg. I didn’t even know how to make soup. Now I’m very confident in my skills to cook with vegetables. Abi was a very patient teacher and easy to follow her instructions and encourage you to experiment.

I usually cook Chinese food. But after I joined the cooking club I know more about local food especially the soup. That’s really good. And the teacher is great. I hope you can get more lessons running.

The course has really improved my cooking skills as before I had not confidence using many ingredients to prepare a meal. I can now prepare a healthy meal using all the vegetables and cupboard ingredients. I have learnt many ways to cook vegetables for the whole family to enjoy. It was welcoming and accessible for everyone. Everyone was friendly and I looked forward to coming each week. Abi our teacher was very patient and tolerating with everyone, having to explain the recipe first and made everyone to cook and have a taste of what everyone had cooked through our roundtable cook and eat. The course has taught me to eat healthy and affordable and make new friends.

I was the original two veg on the side of the plate kind of cook. This course has increased my confidence. Abi was fantastic, very relaxed and friendly atmosphere, Nothing scary! This has been my previous experience of cooking – scary! I look forward to the informal cooking club and would definitely sign up for another Veg Power course. Very nice to sit with the group and share food. Sharing food is community.
