EQUITY & JUSTICE

EQUITY & JUSTICE

The term “equity” refers to fairness and justice and is distinguished from equality: Whereas equality means providing the same to all, equity means recognizing that we do not all start from the same place and must acknowledge and make adjustments to imbalances.

We've taken some time to think about updating this page, which was originally written in the wake of Black Lives Matter protests across the globe in 2020: we continue to stand in solidarity with protestors against state violence and racism.

We acknowledge that racism pervades our society on every level, and that we must challenge it in our unconscious beliefs, biases and behaviours. We believe that anti-racist work must be done by all of us – both on an individual and collective level.

As a predominantly white collective, we acknowledge that the food systems sector in Scotland is often incredibly white.  We would like to create dialogue around this to ensure that BPOC (Black and People of Colour) are supported and given space to be  leaders in the project of creating fair and resilient food systems, and that our organisation can more fairly represent communities we serve.

We believe that a food sovereignty movement which does not have anti-racism at its core is not one able to challenge the multiple crises our society faces.
