By working collaboratively we Lochhill Farm to be a thriving example of agroecology in action.

Propagate is working with Richard and Jane Middleton to rethink the future of this 75acre Galloway farm located above Crossmichael near Castle Douglas.

The project has the following aims and objectives:

  • Work cooperatively to nurture and support sustainable, resilient and ecological land based enterprises, including enterprises that aim to produce high quality food.
  • Develop and deliver learning and training programmes that increase knowledge of, and skills in monitoring, biodiversity; and knowledge, experience and confidence in nature friendly farming.
  • Plan and implement projects that increase the biodiversity and overall ecological value of Lochhill Farm.
  • Actively be part of a resilient and sustainable rural community, including through active participation in the local food supply network.
  • Work collaboratively with other organisations to achieve the above aims.

Baseline analysis of Lochhill has included soil health and function, biodiversity using iNaturalist, and a whole farm system analysis using the Public Goods Toolkit.

One roundtable event has been held with other farmers from the Regenerative Farming Network to brainstorm farm enterprises that could contribute to future resilience.

Invited experts on holistic management, regenerative grazing, cow with calf dairy, market gardening, pastured poultry, and education programmes have contributed to discussions and farm visits to explore the viability and feasibility of these enterprises in more depth.

We are finalising a Holisitic Whole Farm Plan which will provide a routemap for moving forwards into 2025 and beyond.
